Screening Services

Important information

Breast screening

Women patients of Durham Road Medical group between the ages of 50 and 70 will have been invited last year for their 3 yearly breast screening mammogram. This is important and if you were unable to attend when invited, or have turned 50 since, you can still arrange a screening appointment by contacting the number below. Women over 70 are still encouraged to attend for screening, although they will not receive an invitation automatically but will need to arrange this for themselves. To request a breast screening appointment please phone 0131 537 7410.

Bowel Screening

From the age of 50 to 74 years all patients are invited every 2 years to participate in the the national bowel screening programme. Again we consider this a very important test and encourage all patients to take part. There is more information available on the test at https://www.nhsinform.scot/healthy-living/screening/bowel-screening/  or by phoning the Bowel Screening Centre Helpline on  0800 0121 833. Patients over 74 can still be screened but will need to arrange this directly by phoning the above number. The same number can also be used to obtain a new screening kit if you have lost yours. The GP's and practice nurses are happy to answer any further questions you may have.

Cervical Screening

All women between the ages of 25 - 64 are invited for cervical screening ["smear test"] every 5 years.  Letters are sent out from a centralised Scottish database, but the testing is carried out at the surgery, usually by our very experienced practice nurses. If you get a letter, or if you think you are overdue a smear test, please phone the surgery and book an appointment. If you are uncertain we can check if you are due one or not. Even if you have had the HPV vaccine you do need to have smear tests, as the vaccines only cover some of the viruses that can cause cervical cancers. https://www.nhsinform.scot/healthy-living/screening/cervical-screening-smear-test/
